DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMS

Since our inception, the Island Community Center has conducted surveys and brought numerous programs and activities to serve the needs of our community. "Walk for Health" in the gym, any time during open hours. We also have a Senior Citizens program. We established a community garden with help from local gardeners, which has been implemented into our Senior Citizen and Summer Camp programs. We continue to hold a broad range of classes and workshops ranging from art to economics to hunter safety.

One program with the largest response from the community is Weight Watchers.

After diligently working on a Senior Citizen program, we finally feel we have a successful program in place, thanks to local volunteers and participants for their outreach efforts. This program is offered on Tuesdays at 9 am with the opportunity to participate in a strength building exercise program. Alternatively, the participants walk for health. Then they have a snack, play pool, cards, crochet, or just socialize. Most of all, they have a good time and enjoy each other's company.

On July 4th, 2008 we held our fifth Stonington Six/Powell 10K, an annual road race. This race draws more than 100 runners, ranging in age from 4 to 75, with two courses, a 1.4 mile fun run and a 6.2 mile 10K. Participants can choose to run or walk the course of their choice. We encourage local business to help sponsor this race and in return their business is advertised on T-shirts, which each runner receives at the end of the race. In addition, due to the generosity of local individuals and businesses there are prizes awarded to the top race finishers.

We currently house the local Farmer's Market with vendors each week that provide the community with locally organic grown foods and goods. This event has been a huge success for farmers the community and for us.
